Uses RPM the way YouTube defines it: revenue per 1,000 views, with or without an ad
We show the exact formula so you can sanity-check every number
Every YouTube money calculator runs on one of two rates, and mixing them up can make an estimate look wildly off. CPM is what an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube takes its share. RPM is what you earn per 1,000 video views, after YouTube's share, and it counts every view, including the ones that never showed an ad. That is why RPM is normally the smaller number. Per YouTube Help, RPM also includes Premium, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers.
| Feature | CPM | RPM |
|---|---|---|
| Measures | What advertisers pay | What you earn |
| Counted per 1,000 | Ad impressions | Video views |
| Before YouTube's share | Yes | No |
| Includes non-ad income | No | Yes |
So a YouTube CPM calculator answers an advertiser's question, while a YouTube RPM calculator answers yours. This tool works on the RPM side. It takes your views and multiplies them by an assumed RPM band for the niche you pick. The bands are the calculator's own assumptions, shown so you can check the math.
This calculator: (views / 1,000) x assumed niche RPM band
Your real figure: (views / 1,000) x RPM from YouTube StudioYouTube does not publish CPM or RPM by niche, and it does not publish them by country either. Its own explanation is short: rates move with the time of year, where your viewers are, and which ad formats are available. Any per-niche chart you find online is a third-party estimate, however precise it looks.
The reasoning behind the gap is still sound. Advertisers pay more to reach people who are about to spend money on something expensive. A video comparing credit cards or project management software sits next to high-value purchases, so more advertisers compete for that slot. A comedy sketch or a music video reaches a broad audience that is harder to sell one product to.
The calculator reflects this with 14 niche bands, from Finance / Investing at the top to Kids at the bottom. These bands are the calculator's assumptions, compiled from industry estimates, not figures from YouTube. The widget also has no country setting, even though geography is one of the factors YouTube names.
There is no single answer to how much YouTube pays per 1,000 views, because that number is your RPM and YouTube sets no standard rate. The honest way to use a YouTube earnings calculator is to run the numbers as a range and then replace the assumption with your own RPM as soon as you have one.
Before any of this matters, the channel has to qualify. The monetization checker shows where a channel stands against the Partner Program thresholds. For a view on how actively people respond to a video, which a revenue estimate cannot show, run it through the engagement rate calculator.
A live stream earns in more ways than a regular video. Ads still run, and viewers can also pay you directly while you are live. The Live stream tab of the calculator above adds these up. Open it straight from this link.
| Income from a live stream | How it works | Creator share |
|---|---|---|
| Ads | Pre-roll and display ads are on by default. Mid-roll ads run during the stream, placed automatically, on a schedule, or by hand | 55% |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Viewers pay to highlight a message in the live chat | 70% |
| Super Thanks | Viewers tip on the replay after the stream | 70% |
| Channel memberships | A monthly fee per member, whether or not you stream | 70% |

The 70% on Super Chat and Super Thanks is taken after taxes and app store fees, per YouTube Help, so a tip sent from an iPhone leaves you a little less than one sent from a computer. Ad placement during a stream is described in YouTube's live ads guide.
It depends far more on the audience than on the hours. Ad revenue follows views, so the calculator multiplies a stream's views by the niche's assumed RPM range, with up to a quarter added at the top because streams can carry several mid-rolls. Tips and memberships are different: two channels with the same views can differ many times over, and no public data lets anyone predict them. That is why those fields start empty. Enter what your own streams bring in and the result will include them. Left empty, the result is ad revenue only and says so.
Shorts are paid on a different model, so long-form rates do not carry over. Long-form ads are shared per video. Shorts Feed ads are pooled each month, music licensing is covered first, and the rest is divided by each creator's share of engaged Shorts views in each country. You then keep 45% of your allocation.
| Revenue source | What is shared | Creator share |
|---|---|---|
| Long-form watch page ads | Net ad revenue on your public videos | 55% |
| Shorts Feed ads | Your allocation from the monthly Creator Pool | 45% |
| Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks | Net revenue | 70% |

This calculator applies long-form niche bands to every view, so it overstates Shorts by a wide margin. For Shorts, use the Shorts Money Calculator, which works from the pool model, the audience region and the music split. To project a whole channel's income rather than one video, use the channel earnings estimator.
