When you ask "is YouTube down", you really want to know whether the problem sits with YouTube or with your own device, network or account. The status banner above answers one narrow question: can our servers reach youtube.com right now? Each time the page loads, our server requests the YouTube homepage and records how long the answer took. Any reply below a server error counts as reachable. The live result is reused for up to 30 seconds, so a burst of visitors during an outage all see the same fresh check.
Read the result as a first filter, not a full diagnosis. A reachable homepage does not prove that video playback, uploads, comments or YouTube Studio work for everyone. Those can fail on their own while the front page still loads.
| Feature | Our check says up | Our check says down |
|---|---|---|
| Most likely cause | Your app, browser, network or a single feature | A wider YouTube problem, or a network issue near our servers |
| Next move | Run the device steps below | Look for confirmation from @TeamYouTube |
| Worth retrying? | Yes, after each fix | Yes, every few minutes |
If a single feature is broken but the banner is green, note what fails and on which device before you report it. That detail is what support teams ask for first.
When the banner is green but YouTube is not working for you, the fix is usually local. The steps below follow the order in YouTube Help's video error guide, starting with the cheapest test. They also cover the common "YouTube Shorts not loading" case, since Shorts play through the same app and connection as regular videos.
If a fix works on one device and not another, the difference between them is where the fault lives.
Below the live banner sits a strip of 30 bars, one per day in UTC, oldest on the left. The history comes from an automated check that runs every 30 minutes around the clock, so a full day holds up to 48 results. It is our own monitoring record, not an official list of every YouTube outage.
Hover a bar to see how many checks failed out of how many ran. The uptime percentage is simply successful checks divided by all checks in the window. Under the strip, "Recent incidents" lists up to ten of the latest days with a failed check, newest first. Because checks are 30 minutes apart, a short blip between two checks can go unrecorded.
There is no official public status dashboard for YouTube, so confirmation has to come from YouTube's own support accounts. The main one is @TeamYouTube on X, which YouTube Help describes as staffed around the clock from Monday 9 AM PT until Friday 5 PM PT. Weekend replies may be slower. The YouTube Help Community forum is the other place where known issues get pinned.
For viewers, the practical advice is to wait and retry every few minutes rather than reinstalling apps or resetting devices during a confirmed YouTube down right now situation. Those steps rarely help when the fault is on YouTube's side.
For creators, an outage today is a bad moment to delete and re-upload a video that looks stuck, because you could lose the original's views and comments for nothing. Give processing time to recover, then check Studio again. Once things are back, you can confirm your numbers are updating with the real-time subscriber counter or look up any channel on the YouTube stats page.
Our check runs from our own servers, not from inside each country. A green banner therefore says nothing about whether YouTube is blocked or slowed where you live, and a regional outage can go unnoticed by us entirely. Treat the YouTube server status on this page as one data point from one location.
To judge a country-level problem, compare notes with people on different networks in the same country, test on mobile data as well as home broadband, and watch @TeamYouTube for any acknowledgement. A problem that follows one internet provider but not another points to that provider rather than to YouTube.
